As the graph on page two illustrates, shares in Peter Hambro Mining (PHM) are fast becoming a wonder stock following their debut onto AIM nearly three years ago, which largely reflects its explosive growth in profitability in a very short space of time. In 2002, it was making a profit after tax of just US$8.8m but if analysts' expectations for the current year are met, this will have increased seven-fold to nearly US$62m. This success is largely down to the skills of its chairman, Peter Hambro, whose strategy is to build up a portfolio of gold mining assets in Eastern Russia producing 1m ounces of gold a year by 2009.
