Palm oil is the cheapest edible oil on the market, largely down to the fact that once planted it will produce a yield for more than 20 years, while other oils such as soya, sunflower and rapeseed must be replanted annually. You might not have realised it but palm oil finds its way into a whole roster of everyday products for this reason such as margarine, biscuits and confectionery. In Asia, consumers refer to it as “gold oil” thanks to its ability to combat vitamin A deficiency and lower blood cholesterol whilst governments too like it as it can be used to make bio-fuels that can be blended with car fuels.
