Until recently the perceived wisdom was that the boom in North Sea oil production was over, with all the easy fields now emptied and the costs of accessing the more challenging ones too prohibitive. However, with events in the Middle East quite possibly forcing prices back up towards US$140 / barrel, there is likely to be a positive shift in the economics of extracting those smaller, geologically fiddly fields that Big Oil does not want.
