Early in the last decade shares in motor dealers enjoyed a spectacular wave of dot com style gains as favourable European legislation, which strengthened their rights with car manufacturers, initiated a frenzy of industry consolidation. One of the movers and shakers during this boom was Robert Forrester, who as managing director of Reg Vardy, oversaw its growth from 65 to 100 dealerships, while the shares rose from 250p in 2000 to 900p in 2005, following a take-over by Pendragon, which valued the group at £500m.
