The likelihood that we must put up with “social distancing” measures such as the mass closure of schools, offices and large public gatherings as well as supermarket fights over a multi-pack of toilet rolls evokes memories of dystopian movies ranging from Mad Max to The Omega Man. Common sense says it will blow over in 4-6 months but if, as now seems likely, it morphs into a recession, “pound shop” retailers could enjoy a renaissance.
