A lower than expected tax rate was the sole reason for Paypoint exceeding its forecasts for its results for the year ended 31 March. They were nevertheless more than respectable, with operating profit before exceptional costs increasing by 50% to �12m from a 29% jump in turnover to �36.9m, while earnings rose 70% to 15.5p. Paypoint�s largest division, Bill & General Payments, which provides a payment collection network at local convenience stores to help consumers pay their household bills in cash, enjoyed a strong year, with net turnover rising 34% to �18.9m, as volumes benefited from the continued closure of post office branches, increasing energy prices and new contracts won.
