Engineering firm Charter noted that results for the first five months of this year at both its main divisions of ESAB (which manufactures welding products) and Howden (air and gas handling) have been ahead of expectations. Howden’s order book has continued to grow, albeit at a marginally slower pace than towards the end of last year. Charter will also benefit this year from the fact that several of its profitable territories have significant brought forward tax losses and Numis believes the tax rate could be as low as 17%. Separately, Charter has announced that the welding industry has won its first federal welding fume trial in the US, which given that it is one of a number of defendants, is extremely good news.
