With a recent report claiming that as many as 10,000 lawyers could be out of work in the UK over the next two years, the doom and gloom merchants are once again out in force. However, one company quietly making a mint from all this unemployment angst is Penna Consulting, which provides career transition and other human resource services to the private and public sectors. As recently as a year ago brokers were expecting Penna to generate a pretax profit of £4.3m for the year to 31 March 2009 but after twice being forced to revise expectations upwards it ultimately achieved £6m, nearly triple that in 2008.
