During the past couple of months Avocet has announced quarterly results and an increase in its resources, neither of which could prevent the shares falling in line with puzzling weakness in the gold mining sector. However, the announcement on 27 June that it has completed the sale of the majority of its non-core Southeast Asian assets for US$170m, leaving a further US$30m still to be received, has finally rallied the shares back to 221p. Those first quarter results for the three months to 31 March showed that its main asset, the West African Inata gold mine produced almost 48,000 oz at a cash cost of US$533 / oz, compared with 46,208 at US$511 / oz in Q4 2010, which was in line with expectations.
