Although the shares have pulled well back from highs of 520p, Marks & Spencer produced a solid enough trading update for the first quarter ended 28 June. Lower promotional activity as well as a “settling in†period at its new M&S.com website, where sales fell 8.1%, meant general merchandise turnover fell 1.5%. Homeware sales fell the most while clothing declined 0.6%, with womenswear showing positive sales, thanks to stronger full price activity and an uplift from seasonal and fashionable products. Within food Q1 like-for-like sales rose 1.7%, which is ahead of market growth, with 700 products launched in the period.
