A strong first quarter update sent the shares to a remarkable new high of 4430p. All three divisions performed well with budget hotels chain, Premier Inn, increasing total sales by 14.2% while like-for-like sales grew 9.5%, helped by continuing strong growth in London and clearer signs of economic growth in the regions. Premier Inn grew revenue per available room by 8.8%, with a 3.6% rise in London and 9.9% in other regions. Occupancy rose a massive 4.2% to 80.7%. Whitbread opened 208 rooms in the quarter and plans to add 4,500 rooms for the year. Elsewhere, the restaurants business increased sales 5.4% (like-for-like: +4.4%) outperforming the industry benchmark, while Costa grew turnover an impressive 15.9% or 4.5% like-for-like. ...
