When I joined The Momentum Investor early in the 2000s, tool hire group Speedy was one of those easily understandable “concept” stocks investors love. It has a simple premise of opening a batch of new depots each year to expand its UK presence and it enjoyed double digit growth with regularity, with a high PE to match. But eventually the law of big numbers and a maturing market kicked in and this decade the shares have experienced a yo-yo performance, not helped by the previous management’s pivot away from UK SME customers (they claimed the resources required to service them wasn’t worth it) in favour of the biggest spending clients while a Middle Eastern subsidiary experienced problems due to fraud.However, ...
