Much has been made about NATO unity in the face of Russian warmongering in the Ukraine but when it comes to who wears the financial trousers there’s no doubt that the USA dominates military spending. President Biden signed off on a US$22 billion increase in Department of Defence spending for 2022 to a record US$813 billion, more than the next nine largest countries (China, India UK, Russia, France, Germany, Japan and Saudi Arabia), which are spending a combined US$777 billion. Clearly, the need to replenish stockpiles and upgrade weapons systems has never been more urgent since 1945 and the share prices of many UK defence firms including BAE Systems and Qinetiq, 380p, have outperformed the market in recent months.
