The shares strengthened 9.5p on 11 November, the day that betterthan expected interim results were unveiled. For the six months toSeptember pretax profit was £9.6m and earnings were 5.7p, compared toforecasts of £4.0m and 2.6p, excluding the pension credit and goodwillamortisation.  The difference was due to higher than expected costsavings, an improved performance in the UK dessert business and somedelays in marketing spending in France (around £1.5m).The UK division enjoyed the strongest underlying growth, from £3.5mto £5.8m, with operating margins increasing from 1.8% to 2.9%. Rivals such as Geest enjoy 6% margins, while Northern Foods is on 8.6%,so there is still plenty to go for.
