When New Britain Palm Oil, a large palm oil producer in Papua New Guinea, floated in December 2007, it created a flurry of interest with the shares soaring from their 250p placing price to a high of 618p the following May. Quite clearly, no-one could accuse its timing of being out of kilter given that it floated during the extraordinary commodities boom, which had driven up palm oil prices from less than US$500 a tonne to more than US$1,200 at the peak. After selling off violently in the crunch, prices have since recovered to just under US$700 but even at these levels investors should make considerable gains in New Britain on the basis that the company is well on the way to achieving its stated aim of doubling the size of its estate. ...
