Petropavlovsk - Bad news mostly out of way

Our decision not to immediately buy-rate last month's front-page write-up, Petropavlovsk, was the right one with the shares initially falling from 1032p to 904p on news of further teething problems affecting Q3 and Q4 gold production. But the update on 3 November also noted a more positive outlook for 2011. The key points in the update covering the three months to 30 September were that production was 138,300 oz, up 37% over Q2 and 12% over Q3 2009. This takes the total for the first nine months to 304,600 oz. Cash costs in Q3 were in line with expectations while average prices achieved were US$1,190.
