Few oil exploration tiddlers make the leap to FTSE-100 status because either they drill too many “dry” holes or they don’t have the cash to develop their discoveries. However, Irish firm Tullow Oil has proved the exception to the rule and it has given investors a terrific ride with the shares rising from 70p in ’03 to peak at £16 before falling back to the current 190p.Tullow started out in 1985 by taking over small gas fields in Senegal, which had been abandoned by the oil majors but its big early break was the bold £200m purchase of a clutch of gas fields in the UK North Sea from BP in 2001.
