During the go-go days in the “noughties” when oil prices whizzed from US$20 to over US$100/barrel, investors were happy to flock to what oilmen call “elephant” hunters, where executives aim to shoot the lights out with huge discoveries in spite of the greater risks of a duster. One such specialist was Soco International, which in its heyday soared from a float price of 260p in 1997 to over £21 a share, valuing the business at more than £1.5bn. The company made giant discoveries in Yemen, later selling that business to Sinochem for US$465m in FY’08 followed by useful profits on interests in Thailand and Mongolia.
