Founded in 1969 by Lord Graham Kirkham, furniture retailer DFS is best known to investors for its roller coaster share price history during its first stock market listing, initially floating on a market cap of £270m in 1993 with just 21 stores and subsequently growing in clusters by ITV region. Share traders loved it because it carried little debt, allowing it to survive sticky moments, (think Princess Diana’s death in summer 1997 when consumers went on strike for months and the protracted aftermath of the dot com bust), although the share price took a dive. After being taken private in 2004 by the Kirkham family and then re-listing in 2015, something similar has happened again, with the cost of living / Ukraine crisis forcing the shares ...
