Our June piece on Indonesian palm oil grower MP Evans at 850p was nicely timed with the shares hitting a new high of 970p over the month. As I said at the time, it was extraordinarily under-valued and the bounce reflects rising palm oil prices, its maturing plantations (average crop age is c. 11 years), expanded milling capacity and higher crop yields. CPO production rose 6% in the first half with mill gate price of US$771 per tonne (FY’23: US$729). The rising price is due to restrictive Government policies and sustainability initiatives (Save the Orangutan etc), which have curtailed land available for new plantings at a time when demand for CPO is growing at 3-4% p.a.
