Whitbread, which listed in 1889, is one of the oldest constituents of the FTSE-100 and is certainly one of the best performing with the shares having remarkably risen from £4 at the turn of the century to over £30. Best known for amassing over 10,000 mainly tenanted pubs as well as owning blocking stakes in many regional pub companies, a regulatory crack-down forced it to down-size and make a crucial diversification into faster growing markets, notably through the acquisition of Costa Coffee for £19m in 1995 and Premier Lodge for £5m in 2004, which was combined with its nascent budget hotels business to establish Premier Inn.
