Shares in Northgate firmed after the van rental firm revealed reasonable results, embellished by a new strategic plan. For the six months ended 31 October, there was a 5.9% rise in turnover to £177m, with pretax profit increasing 2.4% to £28.3m, while earnings rose 3.4% to 30.7p. In the UK, operating profit fell by £2m to £29.9m mainly because of weakness in its customers operating in the construction, retail and distribution sectors, which forced Northgate to reduce its fleet size to maintain utilisation levels. However, fleet size has since recovered to 52,400, just 200 short of the previous high point.
