One sector that's been particularly under the cosh is general retail but dare we say it, some signs of life are now emerging. Amongst the cheapest of shares to spring a pleasant surprise is JD Sports (FT Sector: Retailers), which over the past three decades has quickly grown into a chain of more than 400 shops selling sports fashion clothing and footwear across the UK. Even before its sparkling post Christmas update, which noted that results for its financial year to 31 January would be slightly ahead of expectations, brokers were forecasting pretax profit to increase from £43m to £47m.
