Wine warehouse chain Majestic Wine's Christmas trading statement noted that like-for-like sales were down 2.9% for the 10 weeks to 5 January. There was modest growth to its private customers, who represent c. 75% turnover but sales to businesses, especially of champagne, were down on last year.Broker Brewin Dolphin notes that costs will have invariably risen given the strong rise in the value of the Euro. However, the company is trying to source more wines from dollar-related countries such as Chile.
