Marks & Spencer cheered investors as its trading statement covering the important festive period unveiled no nasty shocks, allowing the shares to jump to 245p at one point. In response to the consumer spending strike, chief executive Stuart Rose took the brave step of holding “one-off” 20% off discount days and other price promotions and that meant that UK like-for like sales “only” fell 7.1% in the 13 weeks to 27 December, with clothing led general merchandise down 8.9% and food down 5.2%.
