With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight it's always easy to spot the high profile floats that ring the bell for the top of every bull market and Sports Direct, the huge sports chain owned by Geordie millionaire Mike Ashley hit the peak of the recent boom with absolute perfection. At the time of its IPO in February 2007 it commanded a princely market value of £2.2bn, which it justified on the basis of a proud record of 25 consecutive years of profit growth. So it was perhaps inevitable that when this ended last year investors over reacted, savagely marking the shares down to just over a tenth of their float price.
