Ever since it floated in 1997 high flying oil explorer & producer, Soco International has developed a reputation for eye-opening discoveries, often in challenging locations that more cautious players might choose to avoid. After a relatively quiet 2009 this year is again going to prove extremely lively as Soco embarks on a hectic drilling program, targeting the addition of up to 700m barrels of oil, which is nearly five times its current reserves base of 144m barrels. The fact that Soco has been an exceptionally volatile stock, initially cratering to a low of 29p early in 1999, before peaking at 2362p and pushing itself into the FTSE 250 in the process, might put off some investors.
