Mothercare's update resembled a cloud with a silver lining with UK like-for-like sales falling 5.8% while gross margins will be 1% lower than expected in the 12 weeks to 1 January as the heavy snow took its toll. However, there was better news from the international business, where sales rose 18%, with the Asia Pacific, which includes India, China and Australia, soaring 49%.  So far this year it has opened 157 new overseas stores taking the total to 885, while it also has upgraded its expansion targets and now expects total overseas sales to double to around £1bn by 2014, with overseas profit margins targeted to increase by 0.2%-0.3% every year.
