After losing touch with an old family acquaintance, I received an email from him out of the blue saying he was stranded in Brazil (presumably on holiday) and had lost all his cash and credit cards after being mugged in the street and can I wire him some funds to get home. Thinking it rather odd but obviously concerned for his welfare I duly replied in the affirmative only to be told later by my apologetic friend that his office email account had been hacked and that this message had been pinged to all his friends and business contacts.
