Two issues ago, we highlighted how care home provider Southern Cross, 301p, was making hay on the back of a surging population among the over 85s, amidst a shortage of capacity as weaker operators were forced out. Another company doing particularly well from these trends is its only quoted rival, Care UK (FT sector: Health Care Equip & Servs) and scarcity value is clearly one reason why investors have chased its shares higher. However, under the leadership of chief executive Mike Parish, who we met with last month, Care UK has fully justified its re-rating given that in the last four years, underlying pretax profit has more than tripled from £4.9m to £15.7m.
