Mothercare, the specialist retailer of products for mothers-to be, babies and children, has had a torrid few years. The company has always been considered one of the strongest retail brands in the UK with one study noting that an astonishing nine out of ten first-time pregnant women will visit its stores, but the recession has proved fairly unkind with the company squeezed between cost-conscious retail customers and competition from the internet, which has seen sales stagnate not just on the core Mothercare brand but also on the flanking Early Learning Centres (ELC), a specialist retailer of toys and other children's goods, which was acquired in 2007.
