The improved store formats and high profile launch of its new womenswear collection was well received thanks to its innovative and aesthetic products. These had only been introduced a few weeks before the end of its first half year to 28 September, which showed a decline in underlying pretax profit to £261.6m (2012: £287.4m). However, M&S has guided for a 0.3%-0.5% increase in gross margins for the current year, while this year's targeted capital expenditure of c. £775m (financing a 2% and 15% rise in space in the UK and international stores respectively) will represent a peak.
