The shares fell sharply after Poundland reported a 27% decline in half year pretax profit to £9.3m, 10% below estimates.Sales grew 5.6% in constant currency but like-for-like sales fell 2.8% against tough comparatives including last year’s craze for loom bands and favourable weather. However, management also alluded to “unusually volatile” trading in recent weeks.The group opened 52 new stores in H1 and is on track to open 70 for the full year.One frustration was that trading at 99p Stores, which it recently acquired for £55m, has deteriorated in the months leading up to completion as the withdrawal of its credit insurance reduced its ability to hold stock and it is expected to lose £ ...
