Over the month we met with Simon Burke, executive chairman of Hamleys, the owner of the famous London toy store.  Since his appointment in July 1999, Burke has instigated dramatic improvements toa company that had  underperformed for many years.  The grouphad badly lost its way under previous management who had not been able to find a way to expand Hamleys without diluting the brand.  Meanwhile the core Regent Street store had lost its sparkle and magic.
