It seems amazing that just 18 years after it was founded, independent mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse (FT sector: Retailers) has achieved the milestone of 10m customer connections for the first time. Led by its highly driven founder and ceo Charles Dunstone, Carphone has seen its turnover rocket from £180m in 1998 to almost £4bn. while pretax profit has increased from £14m to £123m. Profits could have been far higher if Dunstone had decided to simply kick back and reap the rewards from the mature mobile business.
