Until recently, the perceived wisdom was that the boom in North Sea oil production was over, with all the easy fields now emptied and the costs of accessing the more challenging ones being too prohibitive. However, with US$150-a-barrel oil likely to become reality very soon there has been a seismic shift (no pun intended) in the economics of extracting the smaller, geologically fiddly fields that Big Oil no longer wants.
