In a reassuring update Hill & Smith noted that trading in Q1 remained in line with expectations, with continued strength in the infrastructure products division offsetting weakness in the two smaller divisions. Net debt fell £5.4m to £146m and some of its floating rate debt has now been fixed at attractive rates. The infrastructure side has seen healthy demand for both steel and wire rope safety barrier systems and for bridge parapets. In May it commenced the deployment of 32 km of Variogard (safety barrier) on the M25 widening project, which should stimulate strong rental demand through to completion in 2012.
