From the time of their float in June 1997 until almost a decade later shares in Topps Tiles could do no wrong, with the gain-to-high at one point reaching an incredible 14-fold. However, life for Topps, which is now the UK's largest specialist tile retailer, has been anything but plain sailing since then with the shares collapsing from a record high of 310p in April 2007 to bottom out at 15p in January 2009. While the credit crunch and subsequent household de-leveraging has been partly to blame, Topps' wounds were also self-inflicted as it unwisely took on more than £120m in net debt in order to finance a special dividend back in July ‘06.
