Cairn Energy is an oil exploration & production firm best known for its remarkable 2004 discovery of the Mangala field in Rajasthan, India, which contained a massive 3.6bn barrels of which 1bn were recoverable reserves – a staggering feat for a then small cap share.Cairn sold its interests for a king’s ransom worth US$8.5bn and subsequently returned US$4.5bn to shareholders. While its subsequent pursuits were less effective, the company is now back on form.
