When the Conservatives won the last General Election nobody could have predicted the sheer number of curve balls subsequently thrown at businesses including the Pandemic, the Ukraine war, massive cost inflation, supply chain disruptions and now soaring interest rates. Indeed there was almost an inevitability to the latest figures from the insolvency service, which revealed liquidation volumes across England & Wales rose 14% in the first quarter of 2023 year-on-year and +55% on Q4 2019 (pre-Covid). Meanwhile, complex administrations, which tend to involve larger fees, rose 10% year-on-year albeit these remain below pre-Covid levels.
