Hitachi Credit UK, which provides financing for the purchase of capital goods by  business and consumer customers,  would make a worthy entrant to The Guinness Book of Records, based on its incredible run of 18 years of consecutive pretax profit growth between 1983-2000 (as the table opposite shows). That record ended with a bump last year after Hitachi suffered unexpected setbacks in two of its  divisions.  The shares which  touched 411p in July 2000 fell as low as 85p.  But with those two  problems now resolved  along with Hitachi posting  better than expected final results, the shares have recently surged to  167p, before settling back to the current 141p.
