In spite of the fact that Character's interim results were slightly below already reduced expectations we found Chairman, Richard King, in optimistic form, when we met with management again over the month.   For the six months ended 29 February pretax profit fell 50% to £2m on flat sales of £40.9m. As previously telegraphed, the toys & games division suffered from weaker than expected sales in the run up to last Christmas and although this has continued the group has since made up some lost ground with a 25% increase in product listings.   In traditional textbook style King is also reducing the number of product lines, by weeding out the more marginal ones in order to stock the best sellers ...
