The recent shake-out in second line oil stocks could provide an attractive entry point for those who missed the first wave, particularly as the oil price has stayed stubbornly close to US$70 per barrel and looks set to stay there, given the political concerns surrounding Iran. One company that has made a mint from these sky high prices is Dragon Oil, which owns two producing oil fields offshore Turkmenistan in the Caspian Sea. These assets, which are situated in shallow waters in the Cheleken Contract Area (CCA), were originally discovered during the old Soviet Union era before being suddenly abandoned when Russia granted independence to Turkmenistan in 1991.
