Shares in Galantas Gold, which is dual listed on Canada’s TSX Venture Exchange and London’s AIM, have soared in anticipation of the fact that it will shortly become the first company to produce gold in Northern Ireland. The company owns a licence covering 189 sq. km of highly prospective geology in the counties of Tyrone and Fermanagh and it was the discovery of a mine at Kearney Vein, which is believed to hold nearly 447,500 ounces of gold, that sent the shares sharply higher. The exploration licence was originally owned by Rio Tinto but because of the then low gold price and turbulent political scene in the 1980s, it was deemed uneconomic and was eventually sold to Galantas in 1995.
