With the price of platinum soaring to another record price of US$1,330 per ounce, readers could be forgiven for wondering why the shares have slipped back. The reason is that 4,000 of its contract workers at its Kroondal and Marikana mines have gone on strike in protest over bonuses. Aside from this uncertainty, it’s business as usual with third quarter results to 31 March showing net profit growing 158% to nearly US$48m over a year ago, while earnings were 56 cents per share. Although net attributable production increased 3.7% year-on-year to 124,577 ounces, this was actually down 9% on the previous quarter, reflecting the usual extended holiday period but also labour shortages and industrial relations problems.
