Shares in Dunelm, which we first highlighted at 157p in January, have soared to a new high of 273p after it put out a strong trading update for the 43 weeks to 25 April. This showed like-for-like sales at the out of town homewares retailer were still declining but the rate of decline had slowed, with same stores sales down 2.5%. However, what really raised eyebrows was that underlying sales actually increased 2.3% in the most recent 17 weeks as Dunelm took market share from rivals and equally impressive was gross margin was also 1.1% ahead, reflecting successful clearance of discontinued lines and avoidance of excessive markdowns during the winter sale.
