Although Baroness Thatcher might beg to differ, a key factor putting the “Great” back into Britain during the 1980s was a surge in oil production from the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) and it's no coincidence that our recent troubles have coincided with a near halving in its oil & gas output over the past 15 years. A key reason for this has been the massive tax hikes imposed on the industry by successive Governments and only now has George Osborne attempted to sugar the bitter pill by offering significant tax breaks to develop smaller fields.
