Although the UK has succumbed to the dreaded double-dip, there are still hidden gems tucked away amongst the small caps and one currently punching above its weight is Walker Greenbank, a supplier of high-end wallcoverings and woven and printed fabrics. The obvious question put to chief executive John Sach and finance director Alan Dix when we met them last month is how a company so reliant on discretionary spend was able to achieve pretax profit of £5.7m for the year to 31 January 2012, compared with original forecasts 18 months ago for just £4.5m.
