Shares in N Brown hit new highs after the niche retailer, which owns several “plus sized” clothing brands such as Simply Be and JD Williams as well as leading lingerie brand, Figleaves.com, put out upbeat results. Although revenues rose a solid 6% to £785m and pretax profit grew 2.6% to £96.4m this only tells a small part of the story. N Brown historically made its money by sending out weighty catalogues to its vast database of customers, which had been built up over many years through replies to advertisements in 25 or so national and regional publications.
