The shares soared to a high of 574p after a strong fourth quarter update for the 13 weeks ending 28 March. The food division increased sales 3.7% (0.7% like for like) despite a “difficult, deflationary quarter for the food market.” However, the pleasant surprise was in general merchandise where sales rose 1.3% (0.7% like-for-like) with M&S.com growing a whopping 13.8%. At last, the investment in its clothing ranges, particularly womenswear, is bearing fruit, helped by new style director and former Debenhams CEO, Belinda Earl.Although a weaker international performance (Q4 sales down 3.5%) forced Investec to leave its current year forecasts unchanged, the broker believes the shares, which trade on a 2015 prospective ...
